Genres & Styles

People photography is inarguably one of the most popular photography genres. Find below a short overview of the genres I typically (but not only) shoot.

Traditional portraits

Traditional photography is all about capturing the emotion and expression of the model. This classic style of portraiture involves the model looking directly at the camera. It is often taken against a simple studio setting. These photos are typically focused on the head and shoulders of the subject rather than the whole body.

Candids

In candid portrait & street photography, the subject appears (and usually is) unaware that they are being photographed. Candid photographs are unplanned and do not involve any posing. It can give powerful insight into a subject's real emotions.

Editorial

Editorial photography is images that appear alongside the text in print or online publications. Editorial-style photos are created to help tell a story or support the text's narrative, focusing on creating a specific mood or tone for the piece.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle portrait photography captures people going about their everyday lives. This style is often used in advertisements by brands that want to inspire their customers to live the portrayed lifestyle. Lifestyle photography can be seen as an editorial style.

Fine-art

Fine-art photography is photography created in line with the photographer's vision as an artist, using photography as a medium for creative expression. The goal of fine-art photography is to express an idea, a message, or an emotion.

Boudoir

Boudoir photography is a photographic style featuring intimate, sensual, romantic, and sometimes erotic images of its subjects in a photographic studio, bedroom or private dressing room environment, primarily intended for the personal enjoyment of the subjects and their romantic partners.

Glamour

Glamour photography is a genre of photography in which the subjects are portrayed in playful or erotic poses ranging from fully clothed to nude. The term may be a euphemism for erotic photography. This type of photography is colloquially known as "cheesecake" or "pin-up" for women and "beefcake" for men. Marilyn Monroe was featured in the first issue of Playboy magazine (1953) to receive mainstream attention for glamour photography.

Nude and semi/implied nude

Fine art nude photography is a genre of fine-art photography which depicts the naked human body with an emphasis on form, composition, emotional content, and other aesthetic qualities.

The fine line between boudoir, glamour, (semi-) nude, erotic photography and porn.

While boudoir can be classified as lingerie fashion or pin-up (the subject wears underwear or clothing), glamour and erotic photography are distinguished from nude photography, which contains nude subjects not necessarily in an erotic situation, and pornographic photography, which is sexually explicit. Pornographic photography is generally defined as "obscene" and lacking artistic/aesthetic value.
